Wilbur H. King "War", 77, of Ashland (Brown Grove), went home to be with the Lord, February 10, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Grace; his parents, Thomas and Missouri King; brothers, Thomas, Alfred and his twin brother, Willie.
War attended Hanover County Public Schools graduating from John M. Gandy. War loved his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and NASCAR. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was employed by Kelly Truck Stop, Virginia Hauling Trucking and retired from Reynolds Metals in 1993.
Left to cherish his memories, is his daughter, Sherry Hunter (John); one sister, Romaine King; a special friend, Bessie Braxton; one grandson, Wesley King; one granddaughter, Tyisha Odera (Kevin); five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews other relaives and friends; including devoted, Jethro Carter, Pearl Harris, Lawrence Jones and David Carter.

Richard Jackson departed this life on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at St. Mary’s Hospital, located in Richmond, Virginia.
Richard joined church at an early age and later joined 31st Street Baptist Church, of Richmond, Virginia.
Richard was educated in the Richmond Public School System. He was a former employee of Pitchford Cleaners, Richmond, Virginia.
As a young adult, Richard’s passion for music lead him to the entertainment field, where he was known as “Dickie Wonder.” He recorded with August Moon and supported many groups of singers, including Henrietta Doswell, Doris Allen, Major Harris and special friend, Tyrone Thomas with “Seven Minutes of Funk.”
He leaves to cherish his memory, a wife of 14 years, Saundra Lynn Jackson; three sons and wives, Mr. & Mrs. Mario Davis, Mr. & Mrs. Derwood Davis, Mr. & Mrs. Bertel Davis; three daughters, Vickie Grady, Toni Jackson and Donte; one sister, Mrs. Lillian ‘Liz’ Cooper; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Rhonda Jackson; 3 brothers-in-law, George Jr., Lamont and Gregory Jackson; three step-children, Angela ‘Gladys’, Michelle and Yvonne Smith; 19 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

James Michael Thompson, Sr. was born on January 29, 1932. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gwendolyn Patterson and a daughter Clementine Lolita Baker. On January 22, 2010, he went home to be with the Lord.
James accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was baptized and became a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Chilesburg, Virginia.
James worked for the CSX Railroad, where he met and made many friends. James was deeply loved by his coworkers and friends.
James was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Bertha Thompson, 3 sons, Michael Jr. (Ann), Robert Garner, Jr. and Cory Garner; 5 daughters, Cheryl Lewis, Pennie Smith, Sheila Quash (Henry), Gale Garner and Patricia Ferguson; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, 2 devoted friends Rudolph Gray and Roy Hill; a very special, devoted friend and granddaughter, Mary Lewis, who cherished him to the end; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

“God Is The Captain Of My Life”

Reverend Nellie Bea Winston was a native of Hanover County, Virginia. She was born on November 13, 1946, to the late Rosa Lee and Robert O. Toliver, Sr. On December 31, 2009, she went home to be with the Lord. She has one devoted daughter, LaTresa Renee Winston.
Rev. Winston was consecrated to Christ and joined the membership of the Providence Baptist Church at a very early age under the leadership of Reverend A. Mason. She became the Church Clerk at the young age of 13 and served in that capacity for 13 years.
Rev. Winston has been faithful and loyal to her church and God. She was a member of the Building Council, a Sunday School Teacher (Adult Disciple Class age 36 to 50), Bible Study Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Past Assistant Church Treasurer, Usher, Member of Senior Choir, Mass Choir and Gospel Choir, past member of the Finance Committee, past member of the Pastor’s Aid Society, past member of the Missionary Society. She has served as chairman of many programs: Women’s Day, Church Anniversaries, Choir Anniversaries, Family & Friends Weekend and other.
She was licensed to the Gospel Ministry on June 14, 1998, at the Providence Baptist Church, Ashland, Virginia, under the leadership of Dr. Levy M. Armwood, Jr. Her ministry of concentration is “Outreach and Evangelism”. She is a member of the “Shepherd Ministry” and also conducts “Counseling Sessions.” She is a member of the Tri-County Ministers of Hanover, Caroline and Louisa.
Rev. Nellie Winston graduated from John M. Gandy High School, Career Training Institute, and Carter Compugraphic Computer School, attended Virginia Union University and majored in Business Administration and Management. She graduated from Virginia Union University School of Theology, Evans Smith, in 1998 and 1999. She was a CEU student of Virginia Union University, in the School of Theology. She was also a licensed nurse in the state of Virginia. She had been employed by Capital One for nine years.
Rev. Winston is past secretary of the NAACP-Hanover Branch for 11 years, past secretary of the Virginia State Conference NAACP for 9 years and past secretary of Region 7 (Baltimore, Washington & Virginia) for 3 years. She was past chairman of the Membership Committee of the Virginia State Conference and past member of the Convention Planning Committee of the Virginia State Conference NAACP for many years. She was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia State Conference NAACP. She was a subscribing Life Member of the NAACP. A member of the Hanover Freedom Fund Committee. She was past co-coordinator of the Sunday School & BTU for Hanover and King William County of the Mattaponi Baptist Association, secretary of the Virginia Union University, School of Theology, Evan Smith Alumni Committee. She is a past member of the Usher’s Union of Ashland and vicinity. Other associations and organizations too numerous to mention.
Her future plans were to attend Virginia Union University to achieve a Master’s Degree in Theology and Continue Education in Religious Studies. When time allowed, her favorite hobbies included reading, traveling, coordinating and directing weddings, and making beautiful floral arrangements. She was a treasure and will be truly missed by many family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Family & Friends Hour beginning at 7:00 PM, Monday, January 4, 2010 at Providence Baptist Church (see address below).

Gearldine was educated through the Louisa County Public School System. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She really loved relaxing and completing crossword puzzles in her spare time.

Marian Elizabeth Peterson departed this life on November 14, 2009. She was born to Florence (Jones) and Matthew Peterson, in Richmond, Virginia on December 4, 1927.
Marian joined Second Baptist Church as a teenager, under Reverend Hill. She attended school in the Richmond City Public School System, and graduated from Armstrong High School, in 1945. She was a dedicated employee of William Byrd Hotel, until its closing. Marian also worked for Best Western until she retired.
Marian is survived by a devoted sister, Marie Britt; a niece, Donna M. Blackwell, great-niece Crucita M. Berrios, a devoted brother-in-law, Henry E. Britt, Jr., and a host of cousins and relatives.

Frank Straus of Ashland Virginia was born on February 8, 1931. On Monday, November 2, 2009, he went home to be with the Lord. Frank was predeceased by one son, Charles Straus, and one sister, Florence Johnson.
Frank was a dedicated employee, driving long distances as a truck driver for a number of years. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener.
Frank was known for his great sense of humor and often shared a laugh with friends and family. Left to cherish his memories are four children, Gloria Johnson (Percell), Lucille Roseberry, James Braxton and Leon Straus (Shirley); one step-daughter, Maxine Flemming; two devoted sisters, Janie Jones and Frances Derricot; one sister-in-law, Lucille Walker; twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbors.

George Mason Jackson Sr., of Hanover County, Virginia was born on April 21, 1933 to the late John M. and Mary L. Jackson. He was one of 8 children, all preceding him in death except one sister, Mildred J. Morris.
He worked at the Tobacco Factory of Virginia for several years and also worked as a logger for 30 years. His hobbies would include fishing and hunting which started as a young adult.
George loved to laugh and make you smile with timeless words of encouragement. He was very passionate, energetic and outgoing. The devotional love he had for his children, grand children and great grand children will truly be missed. George was well thought of by all he came in contact with.
George leaves loving memories with his wife, Cuetta R. Jackson; two daughters, Rhonda and Saundra (Richard) Jackson; four sons, George Jr. (Brandee) Jackson of Texas, Gregory Jackson, Lamont Johnson and Mark (Deon) Hawkins of New York; two step-children, Jerome (Jean) Ryland, and Julian (Shiras) Ryland; twenty-one grand children; thirty-two great grand-children; four brothers-in-law, Emmitt Mines, Lester (Doris) Moses, Phil (Barbara) Williams, Demetrius Williams; one sister-in-law, Thelma S. Charles Leo Wattie was born on August 1, 1959, to the late James ‘Jim’ Wattie and Elizabeth Wattie. On Thursday, September 24, 2009, Charles departed this life at the McGuire Veteran’s Hospital, Richmond, Virginia.
Charlie was educated in the Louisa County Public School System. He joined the United States Army where he proudly served our country during a term in Germany. Charlie was a dedicated employee at Dehner Sawmill until his health began to decline.
Charlie joined the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church at an early age, and rededicated his life to God in 2008. Charles was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He always met everyone with a smile and gave his love to all.

Curtis Lawrence, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 24, 2009. He was the son of the late William Lawrence and Rosea Henderson Lawrence. He was preceded in death by a loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Mildred G. Lawrence; one sister, Mary Winston; and five brothers, Alexander Lawrence, William "Honey" Lawrence, Jerry Dabney, Newton Dabney and Henry Dabney. Mr. Lawrence was born in Ashland, Va. He resided in Richmond for over 40 years and then later returned to Ashland. Mr. Lawrence received his education in the Hanover County School System. As a young boy, Mr. Lawrence was baptized at the Providence Baptist Church in Ashland. Mr. Lawrence served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He retired from Morgan Bag Company after 41 years of service. Left to cherish his memory is one devoted nephew, Kevin Winston; a devoted and loving niece whom he loved as his own daughter, LeNette G. Davis; four other nieces, Ernestine Jones, Eugena Johnson, Elaine Wright and Lorraine Trueheart; one other nephew, Sye Dabney; five sisters-in-law, Nannie G. Owens, Lucy G. Catherine Beryl Thompson Young

Catherine Beryl Thompson Young was born on September 8, 1930, in Ashland, Virginia, to the late Branch and Catherine Jones Thompson.
Catherine excelled in reading and writing and graduated from West Virginia State University in Charleston, West Virginia.
She completed post-graduate courses at Columbia University and Virginia State University. She began her teaching career at Dunbar Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. While in Newport News, she met and married Edgar C. Young. To this union was born a daughter, Elizabeth Cornelia Young.
Catherine later returned to the Richmond area and began teaching at Buchanan, East End, Mosby Middle School, Chandler Middle School and Henderson Middle School and the alternative High School unit for John Marshall High. Catherine was considered a master teacher of gifted students and she was a reading specialist. After 38 years, she decided to retire. Her students were the love of her life, and she will always be remembered by them, her family and friends.
Surviving her memories, one daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Young; one granddaughter, Alexandra “Alex” Katherine Kirksey; one brother, Samuel Ray Thompson; one sister-in-law, Edna C. Thompson; two nieces, Yolanda Hatchett (Marvin), and Tonya T. Paige (Anthony, Sr.); one nephew, a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, other family and friends, including devoted, Elizabeth Harden of Cincinnati, Ohio and Sallie Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia.

On August 3, 2009, Gladys Dabney Berkley went home to be with the Lord. She was born to the late John and Alice Dabney on September 18, 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester Berkley, her parents, five sisters and two brothers. Gladys attended Hanover County Training School. She accepted Christ and became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Laura Lacy (Edmond), two sisters, Mattie Mason and Alice Taliaferro, three grandsons, Wayne (aka Timmy), Lionel Jr., and Dunnevan Keith, ten great-grandchildren, Leila, Dunnevan Jr., Caden, Cameron, Brandon, Latoya, Lionel III, Lionesha, Quan-Asia, and Anthony, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, one devoted, Mrs. Carleen Moody.

On Monday, August 3, 2009, Edith Barney went home to be with the Lord. She was born on August 9, 1920, in Louisa, Virginia. She attended Louisa County Public Schools. As a young child, Edith accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and was baptized and joined the Laurel Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Eugene Robinson. She was a faithful member until her health began to decline. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Thomas Barney and was the loving mother of seven children.
She leaves to cherish her memory six sons, Thomas (Bertha); Charles (Lucy), Frederick, Lewis (Edna); Haywood (Elaine) and Kenneth Barney (Gale); one daughter, Annette Jackson; one aunt Edith Mickens of Washington DC; 2 sisters-in-law; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, one devoted Merdell Montgomery.

Jasmine E. Jefferson, 17, of Richmond, Va., entered into an angelic sleep on Wednesday, July 15, 2009. She was born July 13, 1992 in Richmond, Va., to Marionette Jefferson and Jeffrey Lee Mills. Jasmine was preceded in death by one devoted grandmother, Catherine Hunt Allen, who loved her dearly and provided care for her. Jasmine had a very short childhood before becoming very ill and leaving her unable to live as most children. She survived when doctors thought she would not. We were blessed with Jasmine for 17 years. Many loved and cared for her while she became the glue for two families. She endured, and was the most beautiful and angelic child we all came to love, cherish and admire. Jasmine leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Marionette Jefferson; father, Jeffrey Lee Mills; devoted grandmother, Catherine Mills; grandfather, Joseph Terrell Sr.; two brothers, Jibrail Jefferson (Angel) and Terrence Smithers; three uncles, four nieces, one nephew, several aunts, cousins, devoted nurses, and a host of other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Children's Hospital.
Special viewing hours for Tuesday, July 21, are 3 to 8 p.m. at the Brunson Funeral Chapel, 1st and Federal Streets, Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Children's Hospital, Brook Road, Richmond, Va.

Virginia, peacefully went to be with the Lord on July 12, 2009.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Fanny
Hill of Hanover, VA; Brothers Leroy, Kermit Jr, Lloyd & Roy;
Sisters Bessie, Emma, Louise, Myrtle, Easter & Irma. He is
survived by his loving wife Terrie M. Hill, Daughter,
Charlene; Three Sons- Edward, Marvin, and Michael; Three
Daughter-in-laws, nine grandchildren; Sisters Elsie Fleming,
Florine Thompson; Brothers George and Howard Hill. Retired
Chief Petty Officer Hill served twenty-two years on active duty
with the US Navy. Herman served as a Naval Food Specialists
culminating in Managerial Leadership Positions, with tours of
duty in the Southwestern Pacific Rim. After twenty-two
years of military service he fulfilled his calling as an Ordained
Chaplin. For the last twenty years his calling enabled him
to provide religious services that impacted individuals that were incarcerated within the
Department of Corrections, Guam. Herman’s Passions included family togetherness,
worshiping the Lord with families and friends, weightlifting, and he was an avid fisherman
and will be missed by many.

Ann was born to Elizabeth and Rufus Henry Smith in
Ann lived her life to the fullest. She often would sit at the kitchen table with her son David, and they would eat oysters and spoon bread while they would plan all types of adventures. Mom loved all her children dearly. She could always be depended on if her children needed anything. She was truly their best friend.
Ann was on dialysis for over five years and she never missed a day, at the dialysis center. She was referred to as “Queen.” When she would enter the room, she brought such a presence with her; they would often say, “Here comes the Queen!”
Ann was an active member of St. Peter Baptist Church; she was the first female Sunday school teacher in the adult class. Ann was also very active with the ladies at the Military Retirees Club and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Ann leaves to cherish her blessed memory her husband, Hedley B. Hamm; three children, Rochelle Denise Little, Richard Dale Hamm, and David Hedley Hamm; two daughters-in-law Angela and Lisa Hamm; one son-in-law, Calvin C. Little; two aunts, one devoted, Mahalia “May” Taylor and Margaret Boyd; four grandchildren, David and Devon Hamm, Joshua and Keziah Little; Ann was also blessed to live to see two great-grandchildren; Demir and Mia Hamm; a host of cousins, and devoted friends.

David loved to work, and was a dedicated employee of the Ashland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hardee’s Restaurant both in Ashland. David was an outgoing and happy person, inside and out.

Jenkins Trueheart Jr. departed this life at age 75, Tuesday, March 31, 2009. He was born to the late Jenkins and Olivia Trueheart Sr. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church. He served on the Usher Board for many years, until his health began to decline.
Jenkins was employed with Hughes & Kingdom for a number of years. He also worked numerous other construction positions. He was a dedicated Custodian for thirty-three years at Battlefield Park Elementary School, located in Hanover County. No matter how hard he worked, you would never hear him complain.

Following a divorce, Mamie, a single Mom, continued to run “The Dinner Bell” single-handedly. She served as cook, cashier, waitress, dishwasher and even maid. She did it all and was very successful.

In 1974, Earl past away and Mamie closed the doors to “The Dinner Bell” and retired.
Later, in 1982, Mary left
She was a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She shared a special closeness with her caretakers, JayJay and Saundra. She leaves to cherish her memory one devoted son, John “JayJay” Jordan, Sr. and his wife Saundra; two grandsons, John Jr., and Corey, his wife Shannon, one great-grandson, Caden Jordan, one sister, Ruth Byrd, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
