Elmore Matthew Lee

December 11, 1931 - February 22, 2012

Elmore Matthew Lee, the son of Henry Lee and Nannie Powell, was born on December 11, 1931 in King William County, VA.   Elmore’s parents and 7 siblings predeceased him.  He was invited to join our heavenly father on Thursday February 16, 2012 while resting in the Towne of Ashland, VA.  Elmore accepted Christ in his life as a young child.  As an adult, Elmore worked tirelessly at a saw mill.  He often reflected on the “good old times” of walking the country roads to work, and to enjoy the company of close friends.

Elmore is survived by 4 children, eldest to youngest, Elmore M. Lee, Jr, Demple L. Lee; Clyde A. Lee; and Amy D. Lee.  Elmore is also survived by 6 grandchildren (Iris Dean, Matthew Lee, Darice Lee, Sierra Lee, James Truehart III, and Markia Randolph), 1 great-grandson (Haneef Ansari Jr.), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other caring family members and friends.  Elmore’s day was often brightened by the simple things in life:  a nice cup of hot coffee, turning up the “oldies but goodies” on the radio, conversing about the weather conditions outside, and getting a haircut on the porch as the breeze blew.  He will be remembered for his soft spoken voice, and charismatic ways.  Often he paid others in compliments that were simply spoken, and had nicknames for his closest family members such as Buzz, Skippy, and dancing Don.

In the passing of Elmore, we must reflect on Philippians 4:8 , “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”.  Elmore enjoyed the simplest pleasures in life, and his kind spirit was portrayed as he aged with grace.  Elmore will be dearly missed, but is cherished as his family is confident that he smiles as he walks the streets of heaven.

Jahmarey H. Smith

"Jah"

September 26, 1977 ~ September 1, 2011

Jahmarey H. Smith
Jahmarey H. Smith

Jahmarey Hashim Smith also known as “Jah”, the oldest child of 4 boys, was the son of Michelle Aroza Russell and Norman Washington Smith, September 26, 1977, in New York City, NY.  He was a precious and much loved child.  He departed this life on Thursday, September 1, 2011

Jahmarey attended Canarsie High School, Brooklyn, NY and Lehman College, Bronx, NY.  Jahmarey was a very special person with endless good qualities. Since he was just a child, he always stuck up for his family as big brother.  He was always willing to come to the aid of those in need and took an interest in people with disabilities. He was a shoulder to lean on, always willing to lend a hand to help someone out, always willing to listen to someone’s problems.  His smile could light up a room and he loved to make people laugh.

Jahmarey’s life was far too brief, but left behind two wonderful children, Jahmarey and Ashley, who are living examples of how special Jahmarey was. He was a good and loving father to them.

He leaves to mourn:  his mother Michelle Aroza Russell; his father Norman Washington Smith; two children Jahmarey Hashim Smith, Jr and Ashley Aroza Smith; three brothers, Ashante Kimane Smith, Aswad Adee Smith, Anthony Chad Smith; nieces and nephew; several aunts and uncles; and a host of other relatives and many, many friends.

Although Jahmarey’s death was sudden and came as a shock to all of us, he would not want for us to spend forever grieving. Rather, Jahmarey would want us all to remember our favorite moments we spent with him. Think about a happy time shared with him.

A parent never wants to outlive their own child. The sadness we feel is not only for ourselves, but for the family and friends Jahmarey has left behind. We want to thank all of you for coming today and for expressing your love for our son.  His memory will live on and we will all be with him again in Heaven. We will miss you Jahmarey, you will be in our hearts forever.  We will miss you Jahmarey, you will be in our hearts forever.

Edward Greene, Jr.

"Fast Eddie"

April 26, 1963 ~ June 10, 2010

Edward D. Greene, Jr., 47, affectionately known as “Teeda and Fast Eddie” was drawn into quietness of God’s solitude, after a long illness on Thursday, June 10, 2010.  He was born on April 26, 1963 in Richmond, VA to Mrs. Joyce C. Streater and Mr. Edward D. Greene, Sr.

He attended the Hanover County Public Schools where he played basketball and started his life long passion of working on electronics.  Eddie grew up in the Jamestown Road area of Ashland where he was loved by the neighborhood family.   He accepted Christ and was baptized at the Second Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, VA.  He attended Union Baptist Church and Anointed New Life Baptist Church until his illness prevented him.

Eddie lived his life as an example of a disciple.  He would take his last to make sure that those who didn’t have, did.  He never met a stranger and as his family often laughed about, he could move around quicker on two feet then most people with a car. Eddie was a faithful employee to B.C. Woods, Halifax Paper Company, Slurry Pavers, and Randolph Macon College.  He loved to work with his hands and enjoyed the fellowship with his co-workers.  He had a great sense of humor and loved to see his family and friends having a great time. It did not take much to make him happy; good food, fishing, tinkering with electronics and family and friends.  His love, wisdom, wit and positive outlook on life will be truly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Cherishing his precious memories are his devoted fiancé, Rose Minor; one daughter, Tiffany Smithers; one son, Trey Hargrove; mother, Mrs. Joyce C. Streater (Robert, Jr.); father, Mr. Edward D. Greene, Sr.; sister, Rev. C. Diane Mosby (Geoffrey, Sr.); brother,  Mr. Wayne O. Mary C. Jordan Owens

November 6, 1910 - October 31, 2008

Mary C. Jordan Owens
Mary C. Jordan Owens

Mary C. Jordan Owens lovingly known by many as “Mamie” and/or “Nana” went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 31, 2008.

Mary was born in Louisa County, Virginia on November 6, 1910, to the late James and Ada Cosby.  She was the oldest of eight siblings.  She was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Billy, Warren and Henry Cosby; two sisters, Edith Grevious and Virginia Jackson.  Mary was very proud of the fact that they lived in a log cabin that was built by the hands of her father.

She accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, in Bumpass Virginia, where she remained a faithful member.  She attended school in Louisa County before relocating to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to secure employment as a domestic worker along with her mother and sisters.

She was married to the late John Wallace Jordan and this wonderful union brought fourth one son, John Farrington Jordan “JayJay”.  Early in 1940 she acquired a restaurant in Germantown Philadelphia and named it, “The Dinner Bell”.  This was the most highly favorite restaurant in Germantown.

Following a divorce, Mamie, a single Mom, continued to run “The Dinner Bell” single-handedly.  She served as cook, cashier, waitress, dishwasher and even maid.  She did it all and was very successful.

In 1966, she united in wedlock to the late Earl Owens, a prominent barber in Germantown.  Mamie continued to run “The Dinner Bell” while Earl ran his barber shop.  They were two well respected entrepreneurs and loved by many.

In 1974, Earl past away and Mamie closed the doors to “The Dinner Bell” and retired.

Later, in 1982, Mary left Philadelphia, and moved back to Virginia.  Her hobbies were cooking and horticulture.  She nourished one Christmas cactus plant given to her by her mother 45 years ago, which had been passed down from Ada’s mother, and that Christmas cactus plant still lives and blooms today.  She continued to cook until her health began to decline some five years ago following a fall in her flower garden.

She was a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother.  She shared a special closeness with her caretakers, JayJay and Saundra.  She leaves to cherish her memory one devoted son, John “JayJay” Jordan, Sr. and his wife Saundra; two grandsons, John Jr., and Corey, his wife Shannon, one great-grandson, Caden Jordan, one sister, Ruth Byrd, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Elmore is survived by 4 children, eldest to youngest, Elmore M. Lee, Jr, Demple L. Lee; Clyde A.Lee; and Amy D.
